The Society was honoured to hold its Summer Centenary Reception at Mansion House by kind invitation of The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Vincent Keaveny who is a member of the Society. Over 150 members and their guests were greeted by Council members on arrival before joining the reception which took place in the splendid Salon. Guests were served champagne and canapes as they chatted with old and new friends.

The Lord Mayor welcomed everyone and noted that the work of the Society – to preserve and maintain Archbishop’s House – was close to his heart given his current responsibilities relating to Mansion House, a Grade 1 Listed building.

The Chairman of the Society, Mary Goodwin, then spoke to members and their guests. She thanked the Lord Mayor for his hospitality and said that the reception would live long in the Society’s memory. Mrs Goodwin then announced the exciting news that the Centenary Appeal was rapidly approaching two-thirds of its £100,000 target. She thanked all members who had given so generously and asked everyone present to help raise the balance.

She welcomed the Westminster Cathedral Choristers and Master of Music and announced that their predecessors sang at the first Reception held by the Society 100 years ago and it was wonderful that they were able to entertain us on this occasion a century later.

His Eminence Cardinal Vincent was the final speaker and he thanked the Society for its work and the Lord Mayor for allowing the Centenary Summer Reception to be held in such an exquisite venue.

Mr Simon Johnson, Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral introduced the eighteen Choristers and Mr Peter Stevens, Assistant Master of Music, who was the accompanist.

We were delighted that some parents and other members of the community of the Westminster Cathedral Choir School were able to be present for the occasion. After the recital had finished, guests continued to meet each other before proceedings concluded at 7.00 pm. The Society is most grateful to the Lord Mayor for his generous invitation and to all those who made this memorable event possible.
