Centenary

Since 1922 the Society has supported every Archbishop in the conservation and maintenance of Archbishop’s House, a Grade II listed building of historical significance in London.

To mark 100 years of the Society in 2022, the Council mounted a Centenary Appeal to raise funds towards the task of reducing the carbon footprint of this historic centre of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.

With the help of members and the wider community, a total of £90,312 was raised including Gift Aid, creating a legacy that will support the Archbishops of Westminster for the next 100 years. All donations are going towards decarbonisation projects, not only reducing carbon emissions but also energy costs.

So far, all the lighting has been upgraded with energy saving lamps. The expected benefits of this project will result in a yearly cost saving of approximately £12,000 and reduce light energy consumption by 70%.

With the remaining funds, further ‘greening’ projects are being identified and surveyed. Due to the nature of Archbishop’s House as a Grade II listed building, completed in 1903, all projects will, of necessity, take time to implement.
