25th June 2025 – Visit to the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral

A group of thirty-two members and their guests attended the Summer Outing on 25 June 2025 to the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family in Duke Street, London W1.

The Outing started with a sung service of the Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Bishop Kenneth Nowakowski and Fr Andrii Malysh. It was a beautiful and enriching experience of prayer in communion with our Ukrainian Catholic brethren. Bishop Kenneth explained to us the Byzantine way of crossing oneself and how to receive the Holy Eucharist, while an acolyte led us in following the service (including knowing when to stand or sit!).

Following the service, Bishop Kenneth spoke to us of the history and artworks of the Cathedral and the symbolism of the interiors; about the Parish community and the Eparchy of the Holy Family of London, covering all of England, Scotland and Wales.

Alderman Vincent Keaveny thanked and expressed to Bishop Kenneth our close unity and support on behalf of the entire Society. A vote of congratulations was given to celebrate the recent award of an OBE to Bishop Kenneth; bestowed for his support to the community in the United Kingdom since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Our group was then invited to the Cathedral dining room for a seated lunch of delicious, homemade Ukrainian food, including traditional borshch.

Bishop Kenneth was an extremely generous host and entertained us also with his unique sense of humour. We reassured the Bishop of our continuing closeness to him and his community, with many members expressing their hope of returning to visit the Cathedral again in future.
