12th July 2024 – Visit to the Martyrs’ Shrine, Tyburn

A group of twenty-nine members and their guests attended the Society’s Summer Outing to Tyburn Convent near Marble Arch, London, on Friday 12th July 2024.

We were joined officially by recently elected Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Robert Rigby. Councillor Rigby is a member of the Society and one of its former Council Members.

Once gathered at the Martyrs’ Shrine inside, Fr Peter Harris, Honorary Chaplain and Ecclesiastical Advisor to the Society, gave an excellent and highly illuminating talk on the historical context of the English Martyrs including the notable, local example of St John Southworth.

We were fortunate that Fr Peter could then celebrate Mass for the Society and its members.

The Tyburn Nuns had prepared the adjoining hall, where members were able to meet and catch up over lunch. This was an opportunity to hear from Councillor Rigby who shared some of his recent experiences as Lord Mayor of Westminster, and from the Society’s Chairman, Alderman Vincent Keaveny, who looked forwards also to the Autumn Reception on 5th November 2024.
