6th September 2023 – Visit to the London Oratory & Sacristy

London Oratory

A group of members and their guests gathered at the London Oratory on 6th September for a tour of the Church and Sacristy. Brother Joseph, a member of the Oratory Congregation, gave a most interesting talk about the history of the Congregation, starting with its inception by St Philip Neri in Rome and subsequent spread to Britain and the establishment, in the nineteenth century, of the present Baroque style church. There is an important musical tradition at the Oratory and Palestrini, whose music is used there, was known to St Philip.

St Philip wanted prayer to be the focus of the Congregation and the existence of many side chapels in the Oratory, underline this intention and are used regularly for different occasions.  Although the architect designed the Oratory and many of the altars using various kinds of marble from around the world, some altars were purchased from churches, mainly in Italy, where they were not being used.  The Sanctuary is 70ft from the altar rails to the back of the altar, to enable the celebrants and servers plenty of space for large ceremonies in the Roman style.

The visit to the Sacristy was a rare treat.  A Lay Brother gave a most interesting and enthusiastic talk which was fascinating. He had arranged, with the Sacristan, a display of a selection of beautifully embroidered vestments for every occasion, which are in the Roman style and made in Rome.  These are used regularly together with the silver and silver-giltware, which was on display. It was a most worthwhile and enjoyable visit.
